This reward lets customers convert their earned loyalty points directly into a Shopify gift card, giving them a flexible way to use their rewards - whether they want to save up for a specific amount or redeem points as they go.

You can configure the gift card reward in two styles: Fixed amount of points or Increment-based point redemptions.

1. How to Set Up a Gift Card Reward

  1. Go to Loyalty program > Redeem > Add ways to redeem, and select Gift card.
  2. Choose your Points redemption style:
    • Fixed amount of points: customers redeem a set number of points for a fixed gift card value, for example 500 points for a $5 gift card.
    • Increment-based point redemptions: customers redeem points in increments at a defined rate, for example every 100 points redeemed gets $1.
  3. Configure the points redemption details:
    • Fixed amount of points: enter the For X points value and the corresponding Gift card value.
    • Increment-based: enter the Customer redeems increment of value and what the Customer gets for that increment. Optionally, set a minimum amount of points required to redeem and a maximum points customers can redeem per transaction.
  4. Add an internal Comment to document the rule for your team.
  5. Set Reward expiry if you want the issued gift card to expire after a set number of days, for example 30 days.
  6. Upload an Icon for the reward. Recommended size: 90 × 90 px, PNG or JPG.
  7. Set the Redemption location using the Manage link, for example on cart. This determines where customers can redeem this reward on your storefront.
  8. Set the Status to Active.
  9. Click Save to publish the rule.

2. Customer Experience

Once the rule is active, customers can redeem points for a gift card based on the redemption style you choose.

  • With Fixed amount of points, the redemption is a simple one-to-one reward rule with a clear points-to-value conversion.
  • With Increment-based redemption, customers can redeem points in scalable steps and may also be limited by minimum and maximum redemption values.
  • If you enable expiry, the issued gift card will expire after the number of days you set.

Good to Know: Gift Cards Follow Shopify's Standard Rules

Since Flits generates a real Shopify gift card when a customer redeems points, that gift card behaves exactly like any other Shopify gift card at checkout - with the same rules and limitations.

  • Redeem as many times as points allow - A customer can convert their points into a new gift card as many times as they like, as long as they have enough points balance for that redemption. This is a Flits redemption behavior, not a Shopify limitation.
  • Valid until its set expiry - The gift card follows the expiry you configure in the rule, for example 30 days. Once expired, it can no longer be redeemed, per standard Shopify gift card behavior.
  • Works on any product, including excluded products - Because a Shopify gift card is applied to the order's total value rather than to specific line items, it can be used to pay for an order even if that order contains a product you've excluded from your loyalty program. Product exclusions in Flits control loyalty earning and reward eligibility, they do not restrict how a Shopify gift card can be spent.
  • Multiple gift cards can be combined - Customers can apply more than one gift card to the same order, and gift cards can also be combined with discount codes.
  • Not locked to the customer it was issued to - A gift card code is a standard Shopify bearer code. It is not tied to the account it was generated for, so a code issued to one customer can technically be redeemed by anyone who has it, the same as any other Shopify gift card.
  • Gift cards cannot be used to purchase another gift card - This is a standard Shopify restriction and applies here too.

3. Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between Fixed and Increment-based redemption?

Fixed amount of points is a single, set conversion, for example exactly 500 points for a $5 gift card. Increment-based redemption lets customers redeem points in scalable steps, for example every 100 points for $1, and supports optional minimum and maximum redemption limits per transaction.

Can I limit how many points a customer redeems at once?

Yes. With the Increment-based style, you can set both a minimum points requirement and a maximum points redeemable per transaction.

Does the gift card expire?

Only if you enable Expire the gift card reward after and set the number of days. If left unchecked, the issued gift card does not expire through this setting.

Where can customers redeem points for a gift card?

Wherever you set as the Redemption location, for example on cart, configurable via the Manage link on this rule.

Can I have both a Fixed and an Increment-based gift card rule active at the same time?

Each Gift card rule uses one redemption style. If you want both behaviors available, you would need to review this with your account setup, since typically one active configuration governs the reward at a time.

What happens to already-issued gift cards if I change the rule later?

Changing the rule affects future redemptions going forward; gift cards already issued to customers are not retroactively altered.

Can a customer use the gift card on an order that includes a product excluded from my loyalty program?

Yes. Gift cards apply to the order's total value, not to individual products, so exclusion settings do not block gift card redemption.

Is the gift card locked to the customer who redeemed it?

No. Like any standard Shopify gift card, it is a bearer code — whoever has the code can redeem it at checkout.

Can a customer combine multiple gift cards, or a gift card with a discount code, on one order?

Yes, both are supported by Shopify by default.

4. Best Practices & Tips

  • Use Fixed amount of points for simplicity when you want one clear conversion rate.
  • Use Increment-based redemption if you want to give customers flexibility to redeem partial point balances while still controlling exposure with minimum and maximum limits.
  • Set a reasonable expiry window to encourage timely use of issued gift cards.
  • Keep the icon and redemption location consistent with your other reward types for a cohesive redemption experience.
