Introduction
This article explains how to configure cart value-based points redemption, so customers can spend points according to their cart’s value. This flexible rule helps you increase engagement and limit reward spending for healthy business growth.
Why Use Cart Value-Based Rules?
Protect Margins: Prevent customers with lots of points from claiming exceptionally high-value discounts on low cart values.
Strategic Rewarding: Offer higher rewards for bigger spends to encourage larger orders.
Full Control: Set a maximum number of points that can be used in a transaction—ideal for “Established” plan users.
How It Works
You set up multiple cart value ranges, each with its own points requirement and discount type (fixed amount or percentage).
Customers earn different types of rewards depending on which cart range their order falls into at checkout.
How to Set Up Cart Value Redemption
Go to: Loyalty Program > Loyalty > Redeeming Rule
Add Multiple Ranges
Click “Add new rule”
Set cart value “from” and “to” amounts for each range
Choose “Max” for your highest tier’s upper end
Specify Reward Type
Choose points needed and set reward as “Fixed” or “Percentage”
Enter an Internal Comment
Use default comment “Redeemed on order number ##order_number##” or add a custom one.
Set Redeeming Limits:
(Recommended) Set max points redeemable per order (e.g., 500)—prevents full order being 100% free due to huge balances
Choose Redemption Location
Cart page (default/manual) or checkout (Shopify Plus)
Combinations
Allow stacking with order, shipping, or product discounts as per your store’s discount strategy
Notifications
Enable mail/push notifications to keep customers informed
Activate the Rule
Switch to “Active” to make it live; use “Inactive” to pause without deleting
Delete/Update:
Edit or delete rule ranges or the main rule as your business needs change
Notes & Best Practices
Always use “Max” for your top cart range to avoid gaps.
Choose reward types that make sense for your margin goals (percentage for small carts, fixed for larger ranges).
Limit max points to avoid excessively large discounts—especially crucial with rolling credit balances.
Explain rewards using clear comments, enhancing customer trust at checkout.
Pausing (inactivating) rules lets customers keep earning, but temporarily stops spending.
Adjust rules regularly as business goals or customer behavior change.
