In this article, you will learn how to set up rewards for your referral program to help acquire new customers and improve loyalty.
This referral rule is available for Growth and Established plan users only.
1. Purpose
Create a win-win scenario by inspiring your loyal customers to participate in the referral program and get rewarded. Incentivize customers for extending a referral invite to family and friends, and reward the new customer for creating an account using the shared referral link.
Inviter and receiver rewards can each be configured independently and you are no longer limited to points. Choose from Points, Amount discount, Percentage off, Free shipping, or Free product for either side of the referral.
Steps to Set Up the Referral Rewards
To set up a referral program, go to Loyalty program > Referral > Referral rules.
- Set up the inviter’s reward first by clicking Edit beside Inviter’s points.
- Under Select a reward type, choose the reward type: Points reward, Amount discount, Percentage off, Free shipping, or Free product.
- Configure the reward based on the type you selected:
- Points reward: add the points value and a comment in the earning value section.
- Amount discount / Percentage off: set the discount value, and optionally a minimum purchase amount.
- Free shipping: set any maximum shipping rate cap, if applicable.
- Free product: select the product to give away, and set the discount value to match its price for a fully free reward.
- Under When inviter will earn reward, choose when the inviter’s reward should be delivered:
- When friend accepts invitation and creates account - the reward is delivered as soon as the referred friend signs up.
- When friend places first order - the referral is still created at signup, but the reward is only delivered once the friend places their first order.
- Set up limitations by adding points and time limitations for points-based rewards. For example, you can limit customers to a maximum of $100 worth of points in 5 days.
- Check preferred sharing options to offer various referral link sharing options, including Facebook Sharing, WhatsApp Sharing, and Twitter Sharing.
- Keep the variable ##referee_customer## to display the receiver’s customer name in the reward comment.
- Now move to setting up the receiver’s reward.
- Click Add ways to earn or Add referral rules and select the receiver’s reward.
- Repeat the same steps above to choose and configure the receiver’s reward type — it does not need to match the inviter’s reward type.
- Keep the variable ##referrer_customer## to display the sender’s customer name in the reward comment.
- Click Save from the save bar to implement the changes.
- If you want to configure notifications, click any of the notification checkboxes of the relevant rules.

3. Frequently Asked Questions
Can the inviter and receiver have different reward types?
Yes. Each side is configured independently. For example, the inviter can earn points while the receiver gets a free-shipping reward.
Can I still use points-based rewards, like before?
Yes. Points remain fully supported and are configured the same way as always.
What happens if the product selected for a Free Product reward is deleted or goes out of stock?
The rule will show a warning, and the reward cannot be issued until the product is available again. We recommend checking your Free Product referral rules periodically.
Do new merchants get default referral rules automatically?
Yes. First-time merchants get sensible default referral rules pre-configured, which you can edit or replace at any time.
Does this affect the milestone, receiver’s order, or receiver’s total spent referral rules?
No. Those rules remain points-based only. This reward-type flexibility applies to the standard inviter and receiver referral reward.
